Moving is one of life’s biggest events and one of its most stressful. But it doesn’t have to be a chaotic blur of boxes, tape, and forgotten to-dos. With a clear plan, you can break your move into manageable steps and stay in control the whole way through.

At Furniture Freighters, we’ve helped thousands of Australians relocate smoothly. We’ve compiled this comprehensive moving checklist to help you stay organised from the moment you decide to move, right up until you’re relaxing in your new home.

8 Weeks Before Moving: Start Planning
  • Book your removalist. Secure your preferred date, especially if moving on a weekend or across states.
  • Create a moving folder or digital organiser. Keep quotes, receipts, contracts, and important details in one place.
  • Sort and declutter. Go room by room. Donate, sell, or bin anything you don’t want to bring.
  • Create an inventory. Start a simple list of items to move, store, or get rid of.
  • Notify your landlord. If renting, provide written notice and check your lease terms.
  • Research your new area. Schools, transport, shops, doctors, it pays to know ahead of time.
6 Weeks Before: Lock It In
  • Confirm moving services. Lock in Furniture Freighters (if you haven’t already!), storage, or packing services.
  • Start packing non-essentials. Think books, decor, off-season clothes—anything you won’t need right away.
  • Order packing supplies. Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, labels—don’t wait until the week before.
  • Plan to disconnect utilities. Make a list of gas, electricity, water, and internet providers.
  • Begin address updates. Notify schools, banks, insurers, and any subscription services.
4 Weeks Before: Get Strategic
  • Label everything clearly. Use a marker or label system that includes the room and contents.
  • Measure furniture and doorways. Will your fridge or lounge fit in the new place? Avoid surprises.
  • Start using up pantry and freezer food. Minimise what you’ll need to transport.
  • Back up your data. Especially important for work-from-home equipment or delicate electronics.
2 Weeks Before: Admin Blitz
  • Redirect your mail. Use Australia Post’s mail redirection service for a seamless transition.
  • Cancel or transfer memberships. Gyms, clubs, and local programs.
  • Disassemble big furniture. Take apart beds, tables, and anything tricky—unless we’re doing that for you.
  • Confirm your insurance. Make sure your move is covered, or ask us about insurance options.
  • Arrange time off work. You’ll need space in your schedule for the move and a day or two after.
1 Week Before: Final Countdown
  • Pack an essentials box. Include chargers, toiletries, medications, change of clothes, basic kitchenware, and cleaning supplies.
  • Defrost your fridge and freezer. Leave the doors open to prevent mould.
  • Confirm details with your removalist. We’ll be in touch, but it’s worth double-checking addresses and access.
  • Prepare payment. Arrange payment method for your removal service and final bills.
Moving Day: Stay Calm and Let’s Get to Work
  • Be available for questions. Our team may need quick guidance on what goes where or any special handling.
  • Do a final walkthrough. Check all rooms, cupboards, garages and sheds. Don’t forget to check behind doors.
  • Lock up and take meter readings. Photograph electricity, water, and gas meters just in case.
After You’ve Moved: Settle In Smoothly
  • Unpack strategically. Start with bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen essentials.
  • Check your inventory. Make sure everything has arrived safely.
  • Clean your old place. If you were renting, this can make or break your bond return.
  • Meet the neighbours. Introduce yourself when the time feels right—it makes settling in easier.
